Two six year olds have an important event on their calendars – next month's Great Yorkshire Show, when Francesca Kottler and Edward Hudson will present Yorkshire white roses to the two royal visitors. (NB: images available to download at the bottom of this release)

When HRH The Countess of Wessex visits the prestigious countryside showcase on Tuesday 8 July, Edward will be one of the first people she meets, and on Wednesday, Francesca will have a posy ready to give to HRH The Princess Royal.

Edward lives with his family at their farm at Flaxton near York, and his mother, Elizabeth, is Project Manager for the show's organisers, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

For Francesca, the day is particularly significant as she is following a family tradition. Three years ago her older sister Celia presented a posy to HRH The Duchess of Cornwall during her visit with Prince Charles to the event. Francesca's home is in Saddington, Leicestershire with the link being her grandfather, Bill Cowling, who is the Great Yorkshire's Show Director.

“It will be a significant day for Francesca and Edward as they represent not only the Society but all the young people for whom the Show is such an important event,” said Bill.

The Great Yorkshire is England's premier agricultural event attracting around 135,000 visitors to the venue at Harrogate. This will be the 156thshow and dates are Tuesday 8 – Thursday 10 July.

The show has maintained its agricultural heritage says Bill. “The animals remain the focus and we are delighted to have some of the finest, if not the finest animals competing,” he said. “As well as the livestock, our trade stands have both quality and quantity and this year number well over 1,000. The Great Yorkshire is unique - where else can you see the finest cattle, the latest Bentley, fashion shows, a food exhibition and top quality show jumping all at one event?”

Record entries in the competitive classes have just been announced, totalling 12,843 which is 200 more than the previous best, and there are individual records for cattle and sheep.

Elsewhere the packed programme includes displays by the equestrian dynamo Lorenzo riding his team of 10 horses bareback around the Main Ring, visitors will also have a sneak preview of the iconic sculpture “Yorkshire Man of Steel” - the four metre high replica will have pride of place on the President's Lawn. Train enthusiasts can see the newly restored “Barber” 100 year old steam engine which was once hard at work in Harrogate, plus the BBC is bringing its national World War One exhibition to the event.
