COUNTRYSIDE DAYS at the Great Yorkshire Showground

Thousands of school children from across Yorkshire and beyond converged on the Great Yorkshire Showground to enjoy an action-packed day of fun and education at the annual Countryside Days.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s ever-popular two-day event, held at the 250-acre site on the edge of Harrogate, is an opportunity for primary school pupils to learn about farming and the countryside – and to get up close and personal with a range of animals!

Around 6,000 children from Bradford to Birstwith, Scarborough to Stokesley and Huddersfield to Harrogate took part in countryside-themed workshops and displays over the two days. (Tues 10 and Weds 11 June)

New activities for this year included workshops with the Airedale Beagles, Middleton Horses for the Disabled and cycling with The Bike Track People.

Nigel Pulling, Chief Executive of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, said the event was hugely popular with schools stretching across the region.

“Many who attend Countryside Days are regular visitors and come year on year, but we also encourage new schools to take part, and they quickly understand the educational benefits for the youngsters, as well as it being a fun day out,” said he said.

“It is inspiring to see the children learning through participation in the various activities – and I know that the teachers then take aspects of the day back into the classroom to incorporate into the curriculum. This means learning about farming, food and the countryside continues long after the event,” added Mr Pulling.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society is the organiser of the Great Yorkshire Show, England’s premier agricultural event. It opens next month and runs from Tuesday 8 to Thursday 10 July. One of its key features is the Discovery Zone which is aimed specifically at children and young people.
