Game On at the Cookery Theatre

From Michelin-starred chefs to the owner of a Caribbean café inside Kirkgate Market in Leeds, this year’s Game Cookery Theatre at the Great Yorkshire Show has mouthwatering delights for all tastes.

Headlining the demonstrations at next month’s rural extravaganza is celebrity chef Rosemary Shrager, who will be on stage twice daily cooking up delicious dishes including venison samosas, cured venison sushi and rabbit terrine. Rosemary will also be signing copies of her latest book: Absolutely Foolproof Food for Family & Friends. She is a familiar face at the event, where she made her debut in 2009. One of her most memorable cookery demonstrations at the rural showcase was two years ago when the supermarket supremo, Sir Ken Morrison, briefly took on the role of her sous chef!

The Great Yorkshire Show runs from Tuesday 9 – Thursday July and is expected to attract around 130,000 visitors from all over the country. The event is England’s shop window for the farming industry and a major attraction is the purpose-built Food Hall where a vast range of the region’s food and drink is presented.

Commenting on the Game Cookery Theatre, the co-ordinator Stephanie Moon, commented: “We have a real mix of old favourites and new kids on the block, all using game in some interesting and unusual ways, as well as for every day cooking.

“We have a super range including Michelin-starred chefs and the man who runs the café in the middle of Leeds market. Each one has some fantastic recipes to demonstrate and hopefully help inspire people to get cooking,” she said. Stephanie is well known as Chef Consultant at Harrogate’s Rudding Park Hotel, and as a finalist in BBC TV’s Great British Menu.

Making his debut is Lee Bennet, Executive Chef of Leeds restaurants Crafthouse and Angelica, inside the recently-opened Trinity Shopping Centre, and Michael O’Hare, head chef of York’s innovative “The Blind Swine” restaurant.

Expect the unexpected when Dean Duffy, head chef of the Caribbean Café and Nick Copland of Leeds Kirkgate, step into the spotlight on Wednesday as Dean was a dancer before he became a chef!

Back on the stage by popular demand is James Mackenzie, Chef Director at The Pipe and Glass in South Dalton, Beverley. He will be creating some of his famous Michelin-starred dishes, followed by book signing sessions, while Chris Oakham and Jonny Purnell, from Skipton’s Coniston Hotel will be showing visitors how to create delicious pheasant burgers.

It costs around £3m each year to stage the Great Yorkshire Show. Elsewhere on the showground highlights include a mock battle staged by The Yorkshire Regiment each day in the Main Ring and there will also be displays by The White Helmets, The Royal Signals’ Motor Cycle Display Team. Around 5,000 animals will compete for the championship prizes, and top class show jumping will again be on the agenda, with the prestigious Ripon Select Foods Cock o’the North Trophy as the culmination of the three days of show jumping competitions. There are around 1,200 stands selling everything from combine harvesters to designer clothes and demonstrations of country skills.
