Would-be Ed Sheeran’s and Ellie Goulding’s will find inspiration at a careers event for 16 – 18 year olds which takes place next month at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate.

Amongst the dozens of ‘hands on’ opportunities, an insight into the music industry will be given through acoustic and vocal performances organised by Access to Music, including York musician Beth McCarthy. Beth shot to fame after appearing on TV’s ‘The Voice’ programme and she was chosen by Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs. A former Access to Music student, she will sing at Careers in Focus with acoustic harmony group, Armonia.

Careers in Focus takes place on Tuesday 7 October and showcases a wide range of industries for young people from across the North of England, providing a first hand insight into opportunities in the workplace.

And for the first time, the BBC is involved, bringing cameras and background screens so students can try their hands at reporting the weather and presenting a news bulletin, as well as gaining an insight into news gathering and broadcasting generally.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society are organisers of the event and Hazel Baker, the Society’s Education Adviser said: “Careers in Focus is now in its eighth year and showcases a broad range of opportunities and career paths to help young people make what are incredibly important decisions which will shape their futures. Last year around 2,000 students from across the region attended and we are expecting similar numbers this year.”

She added: “There will still be a very strong emphasis on careers based in the countryside – for example cheesemaking, livestock auctioneering and countryside management but it is now much broader, with opportunities for students to talk face to face with a wide range of industry experts covering both the public and private as well as the charity and educational sectors.” Around 100 businesses and organisations will be represented.

The event is free, and open to both school parties and individuals. For more information please contact Hazel Baker, the Society’s Education Adviser on hazelb@yas.co.uk or Di Kirkman, Education Adminstrator on dik@yas.co.uk Careers in Focus is supported by The Prince’s Countryside Fund.
