WALLED LAKE, Mich. – If you want your car to last, you’ve got to treat it like a lover. Seriously.

Give it attention, shower it with little unexpected gifts of preventive maintenance and routine cleaning, and know what it needs and wants even more than it knows itself.

This is the way Kenny Walters, owner of the award-winning auto shop Mufflers and More, looks at cars. They are to be loved and appreciated, cared for and nurtured. Otherwise, they’ll leave you stranded.

Walters grew up tinkering with vehicles, loving the grease and sweat generated by hours spent immersed in the inner workings of cars. He opened Mufflers and More 11 years ago and has a dream of servicing everyone’s car in the state of Michigan. He’s been known to give his own personal car to a customer whose vehicle conked out right before an important event.

The key, says Walters, is preventive maintenance.

“Just like we schedule annual doctor checkups to make sure everything is working right and we’re healthy, we need to do the same for our vehicles,” says Walters, a long-time racing devotee who will be hosting specialty car groups at his location later this year. (He is part of 3Balls Racing, a local group of racing enthusiasts.)

According to recent research, Americans are too lax about car care – until something happens. A DriverSide study by Kelton Research shows that 9 out of 10 American car owners believe they do everything possible to maintain their cars but in reality, only 41 percent actually do. Walters advises clients to develop a long-term maintenance plan so they know when to check back in and make sure everything is working as it should.

“If we want our cars to work for us and far exceed their projected lives, we must care for them. And when we do, no one maintenance bill becomes astronomical. Everything is affordable because you’re caring for your car routinely and reliably,” he says. “It may sound corny, but it’s a lot like relationships. You get out what you put in.”

“You want your car to last,” says Walters. “We help our customers achieve this goal beyond their wildest expectations – a cared-for car is a reliable car that runs well and it can last until 300,000 or 400,000 miles.”

Walters makes it easy for people to trust their cars to him. Mufflers and More offers a lifetime protection program for vehicles with fewer than 75,000 miles – those who buy-in and do suggested maintenance at the suggested milestones will find themselves with mostly free repairs for life.

Some car care tips from Mufflers and More:

  • Check transmission fluid at least twice a year. Low fluid levels cause cars to shift poorly, leading to transmission damage.
  • Don’t use cruise control on slippery roads.
  • A clogged fuel injector can be the cause of drivability issues. If you notice a difference in the way your vehicle drives, check it out.
