APPLETON, Wis. – Wanda Schnetzer never imagined she’d take a trip to Bali. She also never pictured herself teaching a midnight yoga class after the late shift.

The 47-year-old Hortonville, Wisconsin resident and waste water treatment plant operator has done all this and more, thanks to an inspiring relationship and trainings with local yoga teacher Deborah Williamson.

A long-avowed “gym rat,” six years ago Wanda walked into a class at Midwest Power Yoga and fell in love with the energizing, fun pace of classes at Williamson’s studio. Soon after, she joined two favorite instructors on a yoga trip to Costa Rica. Then, she went with Williamson to Bali.

“These are places I never thought I’d visit,” says Wanda, who has worked the swing shift for 21 years. “It’s all about priorities,” she says. “I felt so good doing this type of yoga and I just knew it would be fun to travel with this group wherever they went. So I put money aside bit by bit and made it happen.”

* Please consider writing about Wanda Schnetzer’s transformation from waste water treatment operator to yoga teacher who travels the world on a budget. Her story shows the power of priorities and that anything is attainable. *

Wanda has long loved working out. “I’d always wanted to train someone in weightlifting, but in the Midwest you couldn’t make a living doing that,” says Wanda, who proudly walks her Tibetan mastiffs daily.

So she swallowed her fear of standing up in front of people and public speaking and set about becoming a yoga teacher in her spare time. The confidence grew out of her Bali trip – the setting, the supportive group of travelers, and the fact that Wanda knew all the sun salutation poses essential to starting to teach yoga. After her first brave venture into getting up in front of a crowd, she began training with Williamson toward becoming a certified yoga teacher.

“Debbie has this was of getting through, of having you do things,” says Wanda. “Her people are a real community. They’re supportive. They tolerate people making mistakes. I laughed and said, ‘I’m making business cards with me as a yoga teacher.’”

Wanda teaches yoga at 11:30 p.m. Plenty of late-shifters, from the waste water plant where she works and from local eateries and businesses, flock to her classes.

Wanda’s whole world has opened up since she started doing yoga. Anytime she sets a new goal, she says, “How bad do you want it? Instead of buying that coffee every day, make it at home and put the money in savings. Pack your lunch every day (which I do!). If you really want something, you can make it happen.”

By using coupons and curbing “splurge buys,” Wanda builds up a healthy vacation fund so she can travel the world with the people who encourage her to build her best life.

“Surrounding yourself with 15 to 20 people who have the same goals - after just a few days, the energy is unbelievable!! You create friendships that last forever.
