Formed in 2006 NUS extra is the market leading student discount and lifestyle card provider, giving exclusive discounts and offers from over 170 high street and online retail outlets to all students over 16 years of age for just £12 for a full 12 months of savings. NUS extra provides discounts on a variety of student essentials, and on average students who use their card wisely can save over £525 a year*. Discounts are available on everyday shopping, travel, sport, books and stationery, technology, mobile and broadband, as well as fashion, beauty and going out, to help make the most of their money. Offers include Amazon, New Look, Superdrug, Odeon Cinema, Spotify, and the first ever supermarket discount with Co-operative Food. There is a free iPhone and Android app available for students who want to keep up to date with offers and discounts on the move. Income from selling the NUS extra card enables individual students’ unions to provide improved facilities and welfare services. NUS extra is responsible for more than £4.5 million in income, translating to £2.3 million contribution. Of this, £1.5 million is transferred directly to NUS. In 2011 NUS introduced Apprentice extra to support word based learners who don’t normally have access to the discounts offered to other young people in higher education. Money generated from sales of Apprentice extra will go towards funding a National Society for Apprentices which will act as a voice and support service for Apprentices throughout the UK.
