Make Yourself Better by Philip Weeks available from January 15th
Philip Weeks, Master Herbalist, acupuncturist and founder of the Philip Weeks Clinic, has completed work on his first book, ‘Make Yourself Better’. The publication is available now for pre-order from makeyourselfbetter.com or amazon.co.uk.
A self-help-book for people wanting to improve their physical, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing, Make Yourself Better is full of practical advice, natural recipes and simple procedures that readers can follow at home. All recipes involve only natural ingredients and no specialist skills are needed to follow Philip’s path to a healthier you.
The kidney flush, for example, is a highly effective way to counter the high meat and salt content in the modern diet that puts the kidneys under pressure. Philip explains how to relieve this pressure by drinking a blend of simple ingredients such as lemon and lime juices, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and filtered water each morning.
The book also explores the link between physical conditions and mental and emotional stress. The adrenal glands play an important role in stress and Philip discusses several tonic herbs that maintain these organs and help us cope with the pressures of life.
Other areas covered include, digestion, good dietary practice, detoxification, sleep and the hidden dangers to our health in the modern environment.
Case study: Derek Farey, London
Derek Farey, 56, suffered from cluster headaches for 35 years.
Cluster headaches is a neurological condition and causes unimaginable pain. They come without warning and the duration of the pain can be anything from a few minutes to several weeks. Also known as suicide headaches, cluster headaches, which affect 0.01% of the population, are unresponsive to aspirin, paracetamol, or ibuprofen. There is currently no known cause or cure for this condition.
For Derek a cluster headache would last for three to four hours, and then recur daily for about a week. The pattern would repeat itself at intervals of a few weeks or months and could be triggered by strong perfumes or extreme weather conditions. Derek tried several remedial strategies including orthodox medical treatment and strong prescription pain killers. However, when an attack came, the pain was ‘excruciating and would radiate down the left hand side of my face’.
Derek consulted Philip Weeks, who, after running blood tests, discovered a magnesium deficiency. Philip devised a detoxification and magnesium intake regime – which readers of Make Yourself Better can learn to create and adopt at home (see page 58). Some months later, Derek realised that he no longer suffered cluster headaches. The two years since being treated by Philip is the longest pain-free period Derek has enjoyed since the illness began.
Case study: Gwyn Hopkins, Coleford, Gloucestershire
In November 1998 Gwyn, 59, was rushed into hospital, where she underwent a month of tests before being diagnosed with M.E. (chronic fatigue). In the year that followed, Gwyn endured a multitude of symptoms, typically spending no more than five minutes in every hour out of bed. She would receive iron injections for anaemia, magnesium injections to relieve muscle pain and amitriptyline to help stabilise her sleep patterns.
Philip Weeks discovered that there were significant levels of mercury in Gwyn’s body, attributable in no small part to the mercury content of her dental fillings. He devised detoxification and stamina-building programmes for Gwyn, who then had her fillings removed by a dentist. Within days her brain was functioning almost normally again. Philip then prescribed herbal mixtures and foods to help excrete the remaining mercury.
Now, eight years on and fully recovered, Gwyn has walked hundreds of miles for M.E. charities and does some holistic healing work which she trained in after her illness.
In Make Yourself Better, Philip discusses mercury in depth and explains how to prepare the programmes and herbal mixtures that worked so well for Gwyn (see page 17).
Case study: Linda Day, Hereford
Having been diagnosed with uterine fibroids and an ovarian cyst in April 2001, Linda, then 42, was told she should have a hysterectomy and an operation to remove her ovaries. However, she wanted to explore alternatives before undergoing such a major life-changing operation.
In the following October, Linda started a strict dietary regime, avoiding all sugar, fruit, wheat, processed food and dairy. She drank three litres of vegetable juices every day and followed several cleansing regimes featured in Make Yourself Better, including the liver flush. She had also heard about the effects of applying castor oil externally and how, in some situations, they can stimulate the body to resolve cysts, so started applying castor oil packs. By December, a check-up revealed that Linda’s ovarian cyst and fibroids were gone.
As well as providing recipes for various cleansing regimes and liver flushes, Make Yourself Better explores the benefits of caster oil in greater detail and explains how to prepare and apply castor oil packs (see page 187).

“Make Yourself Better… is a book to inform, teach and show that health needs to be fought for, and is an individual responsibility. The book… stays focused on the essentials of the traditional naturopathy cures, yet covers a wide range of insights and teachings from East and West, from ancient to modern. Different from the commonly available health guides, the author here presents us with more than just a cookbook’s collection of advice and recipes. (He) demonstrates an impressive level of intelligence in selecting and considering what really works, which is rare and very obviously the outcome of profound insight into the subject and experience from a committed practitioner.”
