Governor Bryant Signs Rideshare Legislation into Law

JACKSON, Miss. - Recognizing the importance of providing protections for commercial rideshare drivers, passengers and the public, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed HB 1381 which closes the insurance coverage gaps associated with ridesharing, according to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI).

House Bill 1381 is a common sense approach to regulating transportation network companies (TNCs) by requiring drivers to have insurance coverage from the time the app is turned on, until it’s turned off. The bill becomes effective July 1, 2016.

“This new law will ensure that TNC drivers for firms such as Uber and Lyft are required to have adequate insurance coverage throughout the state of Mississippi,” said Joe Woods, said PCI’s vice president of government relations. “Bringing clarity and consistency to rideshare insurance laws while enhancing consumer choice and protections was a top priority for PCI in Mississippi and around the country. We commend the legislature and governor for taking action to close the TNC insurance gaps and ensuring that the people of Mississippi are protected in the event an accident occurs”
