WINCHESTER’S ‘FITTEST DENTIST’ TAKES ON TRIATHLON FOR CHARITY

Winchester dentist, Mark Aston, is about to tackle his second endurance event of the year to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society. With a gruelling 190 mile cross-country cycle ride under his belt, Mark will now tackle a two day 105 mile triathlon, by foot, bike and kayak across the Scottish Highlands in Rat Race’s Coast to Coast race.

Mark has been training by running or cycling the 13 mile commute to work at City Bridge Dental Care in Winchester.

He is pairing up with his friend, John Knight, a consultant surgeon from Southampton hospital to make traverse Scotland as quickly as possible. They will have to stay within 50 metres of one another at all times.

“After taking part a solo challenge in July, I’m looking forward to crossing some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland with John.” Mark Aston said, “It’s largely uphill on day one and off-road on day two, so the course will be my toughest challenge yet. I hope that my efforts will raise money to support Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to my heart as my father suffers with the condition.”

The Coast to Coast event takes place on 12-13th September, and will see Mark and John racing from Nairn to Glencoe. It coincides with the Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk on September 13th – one of which will be held at the North Walls Recreation Ground in Winchester.

Mark is collecting sponsorship and donations in the City Bridge practice and online through his JustGiving page (https://www.justgiving.com/Mark-Aston2/), with Gift Aid available.

About Rat Race Coast to Coast

Day 1 consists of an uphill trail, including a 7 mile run and 48 road cycle, ending with a kayak across Loch Ness. Following a stopover in Fort Augustus, Day 2 starts with a gruelling 34 mile off road cycle, 14 mile off road run along the Ben Nevis path before finally flat water kayaking across Loch Leven to the finish line.

About Mark Aston’s charity events

The Coast to Coast event rounds off three sporting events Mark has taken part in this year to raise money for charity. He took part in the 26 mile Clarendon Way Walk for Naomi House with the City Bridge staff. In July, Mark took part in The Crossing, a 190 mile biking endurance event across the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, running some of the same trail as the Tour de France. This event had a rocky start, as Mark’s bike was stolen the night before the event. However, Mark persevered through the course with a hire bike and, despite a broken rib, managed to complete the trail in the top half of competitors.
