Mack delivers hybrid vehicle to City of New York
During an event yesterday, the Volvo Group’s Mack Trucks subsidiary was recognized for delivering the first parallel-hybrid truck in the U.S. designed specifically for heavy-duty applications. The vehicle is a refuse collection truck that will be tested by the City of New York’s Department of Sanitation. As a result of the hybrid operation, in which an electric motor and a diesel engine work in parallel, fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 30% and carbon emissions decreased to the same extent. The vehicle also fulfills the stringent EPA10 emissions standards that become effective in 2010, which reduce hazardous emissions to near-zero.
“We are very proud to be the first city in the country with a Mack truck of this type,” said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “We all want clean neighborhoods, clean air, a clean environment. And clean trucks like this are essential in delivering on that promise.” The parallel-hybrid technology works superbly in refuse collection trucks that drive at various speeds with many stops and starts. When the vehicle is first started, only the electric motor is used, which is quiet and free of emissions. The diesel engine starts operating when the vehicle has reached a certain speed. The vehicle brakes with the help of the electric motor, which converts brake energy to electricity that is stored in batteries and subsequently used when the motor starts again. The same solution fits city buses and distribution trucks. To date, the Volvo Group has developed some 20 vehicles including refuse collection vehicles, buses and wheel loaders, which use the Group’s parallel-hybrid solution. The base technology is standardized but adaptable and can thus be used in many different commercial vehicles, which reduces production costs when manufacturing in large volumes.
