Budget 2011: Shipley Principal Welcomes Extra Apprenticeships

The Principal of a leading Yorkshire college, Nav Chohan, welcomes additional support for apprenticeships outlined in today’s budget. As the Chancellor George Osborne promised an extra 40,000 annual apprenticeship places, Nav Chohan said: “An apprenticeship enhances the skills and training of young people and gives them the opportunity to experience employment while also receiving continued support from, and spending one day a week at, the college. We welcome Government plans to grow this vital method of developing skills.” But he warned that funding shortfalls were continuing to provide difficulties in the FE sector. "There are clearly ongoing funding challenges across the public sector and Shipley College is working tirelessly to ensure these cuts are not felt by our learners and that the quality of our provision is always improving,” he added. "However, adult learning and training opportunities are as important as ever and the FE sector needs ongoing support from the Government to ensure that the needs of post-16 learners continue to be met." After 27 years, the College has developed an impressive record of successful Apprenticeships, with success rates above the regional and national averages. There are many Apprenticeships available to young people at the College including Amenity Horticulture, Children’s Care, Learning and Development, Information Technology, Media, Creative Media and Games Development, Exercise and Fitness, Financial Services, Health and Social Care, Business Administration, Customer Service and Travel and Tourism.
