Single Port of Call for Free Legal Advice in Northumberland

Free legal advice is just a phone call away for thousands of Northumberland residents thanks to the launch of a new telephone advice line by the leading charity DAWN Advice. The accessible new service is dedicated to Northumberland and brings together a range of legal advice services offered by the county’s Citizens Advice Bureaux to help extend the reach they already have in the county. Anyone living in Northumberland can take advantage of the new service by contacting 0844 4111 309. Liz Chadwick, Chief Executive of DAWN Advice, which manages the DAWN CAB in Castle Morpeth, says the single advice line will allow even more residents from the county to benefit from free legal advice. She added: “Not everyone living in Northumberland has easy and freely-available modes of transport to visit their local Citizens Advice Bureau, especially if they are elderly or live in the county’s more rural areas. “This new advice line will allow our advisers to carry out an initial assessment of the client’s needs over the telephone. Their local CAB will then make direct contact to arrange a suitable face-to-face appointment with a specialist caseworker. “This service will help people to access vital impartial advice on a range of legal issues and reduce waiting times – rather than spend time queuing, people can make an appointment with the right person at the right time to suit them with a simple phone call. “Many people who require legal advice will, more often than not, require secondary legal services – for example someone who is struggling with housing problems may also be facing issues surrounding debt as well – the Northumberland telephone advice line will make many people’s lives easier.” Set up in 1998, DAWN Advice is a Northumberland-based social enterprise which offers advice and information on a number of legal issues including debt, housing, employment, welfare benefits and family law. DAWN Advice took over the operation of DAWN CAB (formerly Castle Morpeth CAB) in 2009 after it was faced with closure.
