A new statue was unveiled on Saturday at St Deiniol’s Library in Hawarden, Flintshire.

“Wisdom”, created by Tom Waugh, the prize winning stone carver and grandson of the novelist Evelyn Waugh, was commissioned by the Library in 2009 as part of the Library's celebrations to mark the bicentenary of the birth of William Gladstone. Tom Waugh, a sculptor and architectural stone carver based in Somerset, trained at the City and Guilds of London Art School and has been the recipient of scholarships from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust and the Princes Foundation. The statue joins the four stone benches which were carved by Tom last year, with the words love, truth, justice, peace, carved into the stone both in Welsh and English. St Deiniol’s, the national memorial to Gladstone, played host to the Gladstone Festival last week. Library Warden, Peter Francis, commented that ‘this year’s festival was a great success and once again many people joined us to remember and honour the life of William Gladstone. The unveiling of the statue marked the end of another very enjoyable festival and plans are now underway for the festival next year’.
