Company’s employees “band together” to generate awareness and support educational efforts around hydrocephalus and its treatment options

Center Valley, PA (September 26, 2013) – Aesculap, Inc., a leader in neurosurgery and surgical technology is participating in Hydrocephalus Awareness Month by helping to create awareness of the disorder through both internal and external activities.  As a manufacturer and distributor of Aesculap-Miethke gravitational shunt valves, September is an opportunity to educate others on Hydrocephalus and become involved in community support events.

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal expansion of cavities within the brain that is caused by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The disorder is the result of an imbalance between the production and drainage of CSF.

All month long, Aesculap team members are wearing wristbands that are embossed with the tag line “We understand…,” shortened from the organization’s global shunt awareness campaign.  “We understand the gravity of the situation” embodies the understanding Aesculap has of the difficult situations faced by hydrocephalus patients and their doctors and nurses.  It is with that understanding that fuels Aesculap to continue to create new, innovative products that are used to treat this condition.

Team members, and even some patients and patient’s families, have submitted photos of themselves wearing the awareness bracelets.  Also, Aesculap’s Neurosurgery Marketing group is providing weekly bulletins to its fellow peers that spotlight information about hydrocephalus, shunt valve products and stories from patients benefiting from Aesculap-Miethke shunt valves.

Throughout the United States, Aesculap sponsors and attends over 40 Hydrocephalus Awareness Walks.  Organized by patient support groups such as the Hydrocephalus Association, the majority of walks are scheduled for September. Aesculap has sponsored the walks for the past 4 years and will continue to do so for years to come.

“We are happy to support the continued awareness efforts of hydrocephalus,” said Aesculap, Inc. President, Chuck DiNardo. “Aesculap strives to further the technology to treat this serious condition and improve the quality of our patient’s lives.”
