AFRY continues planning in the third phase of the Tampere tramway project
Finnish Tampere Tramway Ltd., the City of Tampere, and the Municipality of Pirkkala, have appointed AFRY as part of an alliance to deliver on the third stage of the Tampere tram network extension, engaging several of AFRY’s disciplines.
AFRY, together with YIT, NRC and Sweco, and the clients, will form an alliance, which is responsible for the development phase of the third stage of the Tampere tramway project. The implementation planning will commence in October 2023.
The project includes street plans for the tram streets, an implementation plan from Linnainmaa, Tampere, to Suuppa, Pirkkala, and a target cost of construction.
AFRY has extensive and diverse experience in the Tampere tram project, as AFRY has been involved in this unique urban development project since 2015, bringing a new form of public transportation to Tampere.
“We are proud to continue planning of the Tampere Tram in its third phase. I trust that together with our clients and alliance service provider partners we will find innovative and cost-effective solutions that will enable the project to move forward into the implementation phase and deliver high-quality results. Tram projects are an excellent way to promote sustainable transportation and create future cities in line with AFRY's ambition," says Mikko Inkala, Head of AFRY’s Transportation business in Finland.
AFRY's expertise in the built environment is extensively utilized in the project. Specifically, AFRY contributes to the project with expertise in street and municipal engineering design, transportation planning, rail design, geotechnical design, bridge and structural design, architectural design, as well as environmental planning and consulting.
The starting point for the implementation planning of the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa tramway is the approved project plan's investment cost estimate of EUR 335 million. The development phase budget is EUR 12.5 million, of which AFRY’s share is approximately one third. The project is estimated to be completed in a year. At the end of the development phase, the alliance will establish the binding target cost for the construction of the tramway.
