6 September 2007 - Aker Kvaerner has been awarded a contract to provide the engineering, procurement services and construction management for Artenius' new mega Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plant, to be built in Sines, Portugal. The contract value to Aker Kvaerner is approximately GBP 20 million.

Paul Bartlett, Artenius Technology Director, said: "This is a key project for Artenius in our plans for expanding our PTA production in Europe.  Aker Kvaerner's solid, global PTA project experience, backed up by the local engineering and construction support available, were important factors to us in ensuring a successful and predictable project completion."

The new plant will produce 700,000 tpa of PTA. The project commences immediately with construction scheduled to be complete in quarter 4 2009 and the plant on line early quarter 1 2010. Aker Kvaerner Powergas India in Mumbai is providing the detailed engineering, whilst Technoedif in Portugal will be working as sub-contractor to Aker Kvaerner providing engineering support and construction management assistance.

"This is the fourth PTA project that Aker Kvaerner has been awarded in the last year. We look forward to working with Artenius and our Portuguese partner, Technoedif, on this important PTA facility for Europe," said Johan Cnossen, President of AK Process, Aker Kvaerner's process business.

Aker Kvaerner has worked on more than 21 PTA facilities spanning more than 20 years. Currently, that represents around 20 per cent of the world's PTA production capacity.

Earlier this year, Aker Kvaerner was selected to provide the basic and detailed engineering design and offshore procurement services for PetroquímicaSuape's PTA plant, to be built at the Port of Suape, Pernambuco, in North East Brazil.  In addition, Aker Kvaerner is also providing the basic engineering design and technical advisory services for the JiaLong Petrochemical Fiber Company Limited new PTA plant being built at its petrochemical complex in ShiShi, Fujian Province, People's Republic of China, and for the China Prosperity PTA plant being built in JiangSu Province.

PTA is the preferred raw material for polyester, first introduced in 1951.  Today, PTA is used globally as a key ingredient in the manufacture of polyester fibres, resins and films and in the manufacture of PET.
