Aker BioMarine hires its first ever female Fish Mate
Born and raised in a traditional fishing family in Lofoten, Norway, Hege Louise Eltoft sets her sights now towards the Southern Ocean, as she takes on the role as Fish Mate for Aker BioMarine’s Saga Sea vessel in Antarctica.
As a Fish Mate on board Saga Sea, Eltoft will hold the overall responsibility for fishing operations according to captain Per – Hugo Ekrem’s instructions and navigation. She is currently certified as a Fishing Skipper and Deck Officer.
Eltoft started her education at high school for fishery at age 16. She possesses extensive expertise with various fishing equipment, as well as IT knowledge, safety management and maintenance on board. Her most recent position was as chief mate and security officer for Torghatten Nord.
Communication is the crew’s most important tool
“I decided early in life that fishing was for me, and I have dedicated myself to studying and gaining experience throughout my career. Along the way, I learned that communication is one of my most important tools on the job, in order to maintain a good working environment and to develop a strong safety culture on board,” says Eltoft. “I look forward to being an active member of the team on board Saga Sea.”
“At Aker BioMarine, we make a point to hire people with passion. Fishing is in Eltoft’s blood, and we believe that she will bring her knowledge, experience and commitment to fishing into her work on board the Saga Sea,” says Aker BioMarine CEO Matts Johansen.
