Aker BioMarine secures FDA approval for QRILL Pet in the U.S.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowledged Aker BioMarine QRILL Pet as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS), meaning pets in the U.S. can start benefitting from the proven health and nutritional benefits of krill.
18. November 2019, Oslo, Norway:
A comprehensive and lengthy journey towards regulatory approval, the FDA issued Aker BioMarine with a GRAS Notice known as a “no objection letter”, through scientific procedures, for use as a source of protein and lipid in dry adult dog food.
Years in the making, this decision positions QRILL Pet as the only krill-derived meal that meets the FDA standards.
Commenting on the FDA decision, Ian Bouchard, VP QRILL Americas Aker BioMarine, said “A key long-term goal, our U.S. team, in combination with our research and development group have worked tirelessly to make this reality. We are thrilled that finally forward-thinking U.S. pet food manufacturers can utilize krill in their products, and owners can give their pets new healthy nutritious food.”
In support of the application Aker BioMarine provided detailed information about the identity, method of manufacture, and specifications of krill meal. In addition, a number of studies illustrating both its safety and digestibility, were included to support the application.
Made from Antarctic krill, Aker BioMarine’s QRILL Pet is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and choline, which have demonstrated great health benefits for dogs. The unique nutritional advantage of Antarctic krill is the superior bioavailability of its omega-3s. The omega-3s in QRILL Pet are mostly bound to phospholipids, which differentiates them from some traditional marine omega-3 sources. Known as the foundation of all cells, phospholipids are more effectively incorporated into tissues and cells.
QRILL Pet ingredient is fully traceable and is recognized as one of the most sustainable marine feed ingredients. Aker BioMarine was the first krill fishery to receive the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification, the highest renowned sustainability certification on the market. Also, for the fifth year in a row, Aker BioMarine received an ‘A’ rating from the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), an independent non-profit organization that evaluates the sustainability of global fisheries, meaning its krill fishery is in “very good condition.”
