REVAMPED NETTIMÖKKI RESPONDS TO DEMAND FOR DOMESTIC TRAVEL

Domestic cottage tourism grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and renting cottages became an option for many. International operators focusing on the temporary rental of dwellings have also become active in Finland, but they only offer a small number of cottages. The revamped Alma Media's Nettimökki is strengthening its position as the most comprehensive service in the market.

Finnish operator leading in cottage rental

Domestic cottage tourism grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many families began to consider renting a cottage as an alternative to holidays in sunny countries or a trip to the Alps, and the number of overnight stays at rental cottages increased by 21% (2019 vs 2022, Nettimökki statistics). At the same time, ecological values and the sharing economy are of increasing interest to people. An increasing number of cottages are being rented from other private persons following the peer-to-peer rental model.

“AirBnB, an international platform giant, has become almost synonymous with the temporary rental of dwellings, but it is estimated that they still only offer fewer than 1,000 cottages,” says Linda Tverin, Business Manager of Nettimökki, a part of Alma Media. Nettimökki will take an even bigger share of the Finnish cottage rental market. The key to this is the scope of the offering – going forward, Nettimökki will be the most comprehensive service on the market with 7,000 cottages on offer. According to Statistics Finland, the largest Finnish rental cottage marketplaces and brokerage websites had 11,302 rental cottages and holiday homes for rent in December 2022.

Nettimökki is a reliable and approachable Finnish operator that serves its customers not only by electronic channels but also by phone. “Nettimökki is specialised in renting holiday homes, so the service takes into account the related special features, such as renting hottubs or rowing boats as an additional service,” says Tverin.

More efficient and smoother rental operations

Nettimökki has been transformed into an even more user-friendly service. The revamp has been implemented on the basis of user feedback to enable increasingly efficient and smooth rental operations. New tools have been added to Nettimökki, for example for the pricing of a cottage.

“Our goal is to produce the highest-quality rentals for our lessors. We want to be the primary place where Finns look for domestic rental cottages,” Tverin says.

In the revamp, Nettimökki is also merged with the cottages of Gofinland and Nettivuokraus, and the above-mentioned services will cease to operate in their current form. The revamp has tried to take into account the strengths of each service and build a single, better whole.

“By combining the services, Nettimökki will have the most comprehensive selection of rental cottages in Finland for all seasons,” Tverin goes on to say.

The revamped Nettimökki was released to users on 22 May 2023.
