Arctic Winter Roads: Northern Norway Shares Key Driving Advice for Visitors
For many European travellers, winter in Northern Norway feels like stepping into a dream: snow-covered mountains, icy fjords, and the magic of the Northern Lights. But with the beauty of the Arctic season also comes a reality that many visitors may not be used to: winter roads in the far North require preparation, caution and local awareness.

In Arctic Norway, weather can change quickly. Roads may look calm one moment and become icy, snowy or low-visibility the next. For travellers without experience of Nordic winter driving, it is easy to underestimate how different these conditions can be.
The Arctic winter roads are not off-limits, they simply ask for respect
That is why the Northern Norway Tourist Board, together with Norwegian road safety authorities, is sharing practical guidance to help winter guests make safe choices while travelling in the region.
– For many of our guests, Arctic winter is something completely new, and that is exactly what makes it so special. Our goal is not to discourage travel, but to ensure visitors are informed, confident, and able to enjoy the journey safely, says Trond Øverås, CEO of Northern Norway Tourist Board.
A short informational film highlights some of the most important advice for driving in Arctic winter conditions:
- Expect braking distances to be much longer on snow and ice
- Check weather forecasts and road updates before long drives
- Always wear reflective gear if stepping outside the vehicle
- Never stop in the road to take pictures, even if the view is tempting
- Consider alternative transport options when conditions are difficult
A local Arctic tip
The Tourist Board encourages travellers to plan routes carefully, listen to local advice, and remember that in the Arctic, choosing to slow down (or even stay put for a day) can be the smartest decision. Some days are perfect for chasing the Northern Lights, while other days are perfect for doing what Norwegians do on a rougher day: enjoying a warm drink indoors and letting the snowstorm pass.
