The soon-to-be warden starts with learning about all basic features and the interconnections between different gameplay mechanics during a comprehensive tutorial campaign in an already established prison. After successfully mastering these challenges the real fun awaits the player in the game’s sandbox mode, where he founds his very first penal institution.
The cornerstone ceremony is hardly over when the arrival of the first batch of convicts is announced to the aspiring prison manager, which requires the swift erection of a first cell block. This should of course be extended in time of the next yellow prison bus delivering its dangerous passengers. More structures such as washing rooms, kitchen and canteen, a storage room and solitary cells should be added bit by bit. With a growing prison population an adequate power supply, garbage disposal and fire prevention measures should not be neglected.
After adding an infirmary, a gym and administrative offices the player will definitely need to look into adequate staffing levels. These employees are not only necessary for taking care of the inmates and the smooth operation of the facility, they will also need to keep a cool head in difficult situations such as fires, riots, power outages and attempted breakouts of various kinds.
The bigger the prison becomes in time, the more complex and challenging the daily tasks of the prison manager will be.
Additional to the campaign and the free sandbox gameplay Prison Architect offers another exciting game mode: the breakout mode. Here the player slips into the role of a prisoner whose primary goal is to escape the maximum security jail he is incarcerated in – a most difficult task.
