Augean has entered into a joint venture with Scomi to extend its range of hazardous waste services to support the oil and gas sector. The new company Augean North Sea Services will provide a dedicated service to the sector.

The offshore oil and gas sector will be the significant beneficiaries of a recent joint venture, with improved access to services and facilities to safely manage and handle a range of hazardous wastes. This follows the announcement by Augean PLC (‘Augean’) to enter a joint venture with Scomi Oiltools (Europe) Limited (‘Scomi’) and take a controlling stake in a new company formed from the existing operational assets of Scomi in the UK. The new business will deliver a network of services and plants across the UK to deal with the growing needs of hazardous waste treatment and disposal.

The new company, Augean North Sea Services (‘ANSS’), now provides waste management services to offshore operators in the North Sea, and extends Augean’s leading position in the hazardous waste management sector.

The joint venture builds upon the existing relationship between Augean and Scomi for the treatment of drill cuttings from offshore oil and gas exploration. Augean already had a significant working partnership with Scomi using the thermal treatment and disposal facilities at Port Clarence and Scomi's offshore waste management resources, based in Aberdeen.

Combining these activities through ANSS, the new venture will have the capability to source, contain, treat, recycle and ultimately dispose of offshore wastes for its customers, through an integrated waste management supply chain. This combining of services and processes is a major opportunity to the offshore industry based in the North Sea and ensures local facilities for waste treatment and storage and Augean’s significant experience and process management of hazardous wastes can be optimised fully.

Augean are able to manage NORM scale from decommissioning and repair and maintenance activities, and also has extensive experience of LLW hazardous waste management. The unparalleled ability to work in partnership with the oil and gas sector offering complete compliance and security in the transfer, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste is now expanded significantly through this joint venture and presence.

The joint venture will utilise the operational bases in Aberdeen and Lerwick in Shetland, including offices and industrial premises, which will provide a base for managing and storing wastes. ANSS operations will centre on the large waste treatment and storage facility at Pocra Quay in Aberdeen and specialist equipment used in the management and transportation of waste materials from North Sea drilling platforms. As part of the joint venture 40 experienced employees based in Aberdeen have transferred from Scomi into ANSS to manage and operate the venture.

Martin Snaith, Group Development Director at Augean commented: ‘ANSS will provide services to existing Scomi customers and develop and extend its activities and services over the next 12 months. The core of the operation will be drilling waste management on the offshore platforms, supported by onshore treatment of drill cuttings and treatment and disposal of other wastes from service vessels utilising the specialist treatment and storage facility at Pocra Quay. This joint venture is an outstanding example of bringing together experience, processes, technology and a real understanding of hazardous waste management, to deliver significant benefits to a sector.’

‘In setting up this joint venture both parties expect to benefit from current and future opportunities to manage offshore waste whilst providing access to the emerging market for the decommissioning of redundant offshore structures, and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM), which are expected to grow over the next 10 years. It is our background in NORM and LLW waste management which will reassure and provide excellent prospects for the offshore operators based in the region.’
