Avid Supports Sundance Institute with Professional Editing and Shared Storage Solutions
Renowned Feature Film Program’s Directors Lab uses Media Composer 6 and ISIS 5000 to accelerate collaborative workflows for 8 leading-edge, independent film projects selected this year
BURLINGTON, MA— 7 June 2012—Underscoring its commitment to emerging independent filmmakers, Avid® (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced its continued support of Sundance Institute’s annual June Directors Lab, taking place now in Utah. For more than 20 years, Avid has equipped this distinguished program with its flagship professional editing software, and in 2012, the 8 selected projects and associated program participants will use Avid Media Composer 6 software, Nitris® DX hardware and Avid ISIS® 5000 shared storage to enhance and speed their creative process.
Hosted by Sundance Institute’s Feature Film Program, the Directors Lab offers a select group of projects and participants the opportunity to work with an accomplished group of creative advisors, professional actors and production crews to shoot and edit key scenes from their screenplays. Some of the notable films supported over the Feature Film Program’s history include: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Maria Full of Grace, Requiemfor a Dream and Boys Don’t Cry. During the Directors Lab, filmmakers go through a production process — rehearse, shoot and edit — on multiple scenes, so Sundance Institute was looking for technology that could enable filmmakers and their advisors to quickly and effectively assemble, edit and turnaround their work for review and feedback.
“The Directors Lab provides new feature film directors with a unique environment in which to collaborate and work towards bringing their stories to the screen,” said Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute. “Just as we look for innovation and quality when selecting projects to participate in the Lab, we aim to innovate in the ways we use technology to help these filmmakers realise their visions.”
What began with one crew working on two Media Composer systems has grown to four production crews, with Avid supplying seven Media Composer 6 systems, a Nitris DX interface, and a 32 TB ISIS 5000 shared storage system. The addition of the ISIS 5000 for the 2012 program will enable participants and crew to share and access media across multiple locations as well as enhance flexibility by allowing multiple participants or crew to access material whenever they need it.
“We’re honoured to support Sundance Institute and its mission to discover, support and inspire independent film artists from around the world,” said Kirk Arnold, Chief Operating Officer at Avid. “We look forward to seeing how this year’s participants use our technology, and we’re proud to work with the Directors Lab to help these filmmakers succeed.”
