Academy's first ever MasterChef final uncovers cooking talent

Wednesday 11 July was a busy day in the kitchens of Hertfordshire's The Bushey Academy with the staging of its young MasterChef final.

Finalists were given 2 and a half hours in the Academy's Cucina restaurant kitchen, where they had to prepare and present 2 complete courses. Eventual winners were Ryan Fardela and Nice Nutaviri, with a winning main course of 'chicken wrapped in bacon and mature cheddar, crushed potatoes and creamed leeks', and for dessert: 'chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce and wild strawberry puree'.

Organised by the Academy's DT subject leader Jonathon Hawkins in conjunction with Academy's catering company Cucina Restaurants, the competition involved heats within DT classes from which were selected 8 finalists - 2 students from each of the 4 houses.

Bushey Academy's resident chef, Tony Lones of Cucina, said: "This was an inspirational example of teaching staff, kitchen staff and students working together to do something special. Our shared commitment and expertise is helping young cooks aspire to the restaurant standards they see on TV. The winning dishes these young people served up were absolutely fantastic."

According to Jonathon Hawkins, 'Masterchef' now looks set to be a regular feature in the Academy's calendar.
