Bibby Distribution has unveiled two new longer semi-trailers (LSTs) that will cut carbon and boost brand awareness for Tayto Group Ltd, the biggest British-owned crisp and snack manufacturer.

In a further move to meet the ever-changing needs of its clients, Bibby Distribution has taken delivery of the two new LSTs and liveried them with the Real Crisps and Mr Porky brands. The introduction of the two new 15.6 m LSTs is a further demonstration to their long-term commitment with Tayto, which seeks to ensure great on-shelf availability while decreasing its carbon footprint.

Nigel Smith, Tayto’s Supply Chain Director, says: “Bibby Distribution has always made it a priority to understand our product, our market and our specific needs. These specialised new trailers are yet another example of that ongoing support and highlight the reason why we continue to work so closely with the company. They have always been flexible enough to adapt and offer us a personalised service, something you’d more normally associate with a smaller company, but with the reach to work with us cost-effectively on a national scale.”

The LSTs, which have been introduced as part of the 10-year Government trial in which Bibby is a core participant, make a welcome addition to the fleet and are especially beneficial to Tayto, which needs to move a low weight, high volume product.

Smith explains: “The introduction of these two new trailers is very exciting for us at Tayto. Not only do they look fantastic with their new branding, acting as mobile billboards for our products, they also directly assist us in meeting our goals – which are to ensure our product reaches the customer quickly and in quantity, but also in a way that has the least impact on the environment.”

The arrival of the two LSTs follows the snack manufacturer’s introduction of a ‘virtual warehouse’ system which was jointly developed by teams from Bibby Distribution and Tayto’s Supply Chain & Commercial department.

The system, which has been up and running for nearly a year, has seen the removal of nearly 250 tonnes of CO2 emissions from Tayto’s supply chain since its introduction last July. The new process was developed to allow a single ordering point for customers, removing the need for a separate physical facility, while streamlining the ordering and delivery process, providing Tayto with the most efficient route for its product from the manufacturing facility to the consumer. These innovations, coupled with the reduction in delivery trips, mean a substantial reduction in food miles for Tayto.

“Bibby Distribution helps us to continually innovate and streamline our distribution and supply chain. By using the latest technology and developing new solutions, it boosts our on-shelf ability while at the same time helping us deliver on our corporate social responsibility goals,” concludes Smith.
