BIBBY DISTRIBUTION ON ROAD TO REDUCE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT

Bibby Distribution is continuing its efforts to increase fleet efficiency and minimise the impact of its operations on the environment. Following significant investment in both its fleet assets and advanced driver training in 2012, the company has reduced its total diesel consumption by two per cent.
The drop in fuel usage is combined with a reduction in fleet size of 4.8 per cent over 12 months – made possible by more efficient scheduling and routing of vehicles.
Commenting on the achievements to-date, Iain Speak, Chief Executive Officer of Bibby Distribution, says: “It’s imperative we measure and manage the impact of our operations on the environment.
“This is not only a moral obligation, but reducing our CO2 emissions generally provides a cost benefit as well. It can also act as a differentiator when we are tendering for business or developing an existing account.”
The company’s fuel saving achievements follow an 18-month period which has seen it roll out a host of new environmental initiatives, including the introduction of 20 aerodynamic teardrop trailers and training in Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) techniques for more than 400 drivers.
Across the Bibby Distribution fleet, 90 per cent of vehicles now feature automatic transmission which optimise fuel-efficient running, plus it is operating in excess of 750 high-cube, double-deck trailers, to maximise the volume of freight that can be transported in a single truckload. By the end of 2013 Bibby will also have 25 longer semi-trailers (LSTs) in service; and the company is lobbying to have its allocation of LSTs increased. They are one of the few operators to effectively deploy its full allocation.
Speak adds: “In the coming years our new Transport Management System will provide us with the operational visibility to drive even greater efficiencies. By combining technology with innovation and training we’re able to realise tangible benefits for all concerned.”
The company has made further environmental improvements, including the introduction of a remould tyre policy for its trucks and trailers, resulting in emissions savings of 124 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
Bibby Distribution is a member of the Freight Transport Association’s Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, which monitors Key Performance Indicators including emissions per vehicle kilometre, emissions per pound of company turnover and emissions per full time equivalent employee.
