Fitness Resolutions 101

For all of us fitness resolution makers it is the perfect time to make this year work. What more of a sign do we need than the first day of the New Year falling on a Friday which at Boca Grove is “Fit Friday”! So with that in mind here is a little help and advice from our Fitness Director David Schlueter on how to make those fitness resolutions stick all year through.

  1. Make short term goals for your long term ones! Take your goal for the year and break it down in to smaller goals. The smaller goals will help keep you motivated and will make things less intimidating and stressful so that you are able to accomplish your long term goals. For example, if your long term goal is to fit in your clothes better than a small term goal could be to avoid bagels for a week.

  1. Make your goals attainable! By making your goals attainable there is less chance of you getting frustrated and giving up. For instance, make your goal to lose 5 to 10 pounds by March versus making a goal of having six-pack abs by March. You have just made your goal manageable and therefore a lesser chance of you getting overwhelmed and quitting your goal.

  1. Use the buddy system! By having someone also trying to achieve the same goal as you (friend, spouse, parent, child, etc) is always helpful, that way the two of you can support each other and hold each other accountable. It is easy to tell yourself no, not as easy to tell someone else no.

  1. Have a plan! Just wanting to lose weight, get stronger or become more flexible are all good ideas, but how? If you are having trouble breaking your resolution in to a plan than reach out to an expert like a dietician, nutritionist, personal trainer or a doctor. They can help you formulate a game plan and help be another source of accountability.
