Entrepreneur Ola Bartholdsson’s investment in biomarkers has global market potential

One drop of blood on a filter paper is all they need at Bodymarkers, a bioanalysis company counting on sales of ten million tests per year and the disappearance of health problems such as vitamin D deficiency. Bodymarkers uses an entirely new technology platform – mass spectrometry combined with a smartphone health app – to analyse blood biomarkers and provide people with access to hitherto hidden information about their own bodies.

“Everyone wants to keep tabs on their health, so we’ve taken the guesswork out of it– you get your precise indicators sent straight to your smartphone. Because the analysis technology is both precise and low cost, everyone has access to true preventive care. This will fundamentally change how we regard health per se,” says Ola Bartholdsson, CEO and founder of Bodymarkers.

Bodymarkers’ business idea is to analyse biomarkers – substances in the blood – and present them in a smartphone health app. The test kit, designed for home use, will be sold at pharmacists, health stores and other selected retailers.

“The analysis technology can track hundreds of biomarkers in the blood such as hormones, vitamins, minerals or toxins. There is currently only one way of finding this out, namely by turning to private healthcare, which is expensive. In the public healthcare system, one must first fall ill in order to get assistance, but with our technology many illnesses and much suffering can be prevented just by checking blood values.”

By analysing several biomarkers at once, it is also possible to provide a prognosis of future health. This is something Ola Bartholdsson has set his sights on doing as soon as biomarker mapping permits.

"Biomarkers are a fantastic source of information that can lead to better health for so many people. Finding out through a little drop of dried blood that they are at risk of developing diabetes within five years would get most people to change their lifestyles.”

The potential market for Bodymarkers’ bioanalyses is global and thus enormous. The first test – for vitamin D – will be available for retail in the beginning of 2016.

"More than one in three people in Europe are thought to suffer from vitamin D deficiency, something which can lead to e.g. tiredness, depression or serious illness. Now everyone can find out at home whether or not they are deficient in vitamin D without placing an unnecessary burden on public healthcare.”

“We have carefully put together a rock-solid supplier chain. We will keep a buffer stock of all tests for every market in Europe with our 3PL partner in Helsingborg. After Europe, expansion to the USA, Asia and the rest of the world awaits – our forecast for the coming years is sales of 10 million tests per year,” says Ola Bartholdsson, CEO and founder of Bodymarkers.
