Cloud is business fire guard

In response to the factory fire in Coventry on Wednesday, IT expert, Netmetix Limited, is highlighting how cloud computing can mitigate the impact of business disruption caused by physical threats such as fire, flood and theft.

The blaze that caused £6 million of damage to a warehouse factory and nearby companies on Middlemarch Business Park made national news last week. The knock-on effect of the disaster left many employees from surrounding companies unable to access their workplaces after police closed Siskin Drive.

Cloud computing is an IT solution that has taken the world by storm as thousands of companies reap the benefits of working remotely. Netmetix, a leading cloud solutions provider in the Midlands, launched Cloudmetix last year and is making companies aware of how cloud computing can enable them to continue working if day-to-day operations have been disrupted.

Sandra Garlick, Principal of De Marco Solicitors based on Middlemarch Business Park, said: “Fortunately we haven’t experienced any business disruption as a result of this fire. However, if our building had been directly affected by the blaze it would have caused a major problem because it would have destroyed our in-house server. We are now in the process of transferring our IT to a cloud based system because we recognise how safe data is when stored on remote servers.”

Accessing data and IT systems remotely is not the only benefit of cloud computing. Netmetix highlights the disaster recovery elements of the solution, which would safeguard data in the event of fire, flood or other disaster. Data security in the information age is one of the key business concerns, with attention being given to where data is stored, how it is backed up and how it is protected from cyber attacks. Disaster recovery is not an issue with a full cloud infrastructure platform such as Cloudmetix as all these aspects are included in the solution as standard.

Paul Blore, managing director of Netmetix Limited, said: “By implementing a cloud solution in your business, you are eliminating the need for in-house servers to store all of your company’s data. For instance, with Cloudmetix we have highly secure UK based data centre. This means that in the event of staff not being able to access the physical office, they can still access the company data and all the applications from anywhere else as long as they have an internet connection.”

This was not the first occasion where local businesses have been affected by such a disruption. It is the second factory fire to hit the Coventry business park in three months after a similar factory was burnt down in May.

Paul Blore continued: “The major disruption caused by the factory blaze this week demonstrates the devastating effect this can have on businesses. This fire has caused chaos for most of the companies along Siskin Drive. If you also put cyber attacks and the disruption that cable thefts have on businesses, it seems they are under attack from all angles. Thankfully technology also provides solutions, and for companies that are on the cloud, they can at least continue to function.
