Cranfield helps Lady Godiva come back to life

Cranfield Business Recovery is celebrating after the highly successful Godiva Awakes project marked the beginning of the 30th OIympic Games over the weekend.

Coventry’s own pre-Olympic celebration, Godiva Awakes saw a hugely impressive mechanically engineered six metre high animated Lady Godiva puppet powered by a team of 100 cyclists on a cyclopedia begin her seven day journey to London, accompanied by a carnival of over 200 dancers and performers from across the region.

Cranfield has been heavily involved in the project since becoming its first ever Golden Patron in December 2011. A VIP invitee to the awakening ceremony, Cranfield’s involvement in the celebration was recognised as the company had its very own branded panel inside Lady Godiva’s coat, which is now due to be displayed at the Artist Taking the Lead exhibition at Westminster Hall, in London

From the initial preparations of Godiva Awakes, Cranfield has always promoted the celebration as much more than a cultural Olympiad event. The project has involved over 50 local companies that have helped in the design, engineering and construction of Lady Godiva and the cyclopedia, and represents the very best of Midland manufacturing. As a company heavily involved in the Midlands business community, Cranfield held its own Olympic breakfast with Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. This helped to build momentum with other businesses ahead of the Games.

After seeing the results of all their efforts and hard work around Godiva Awakes, Cranfield’s directors Tony Mitchell and Patrick Murtagh are delighted that the celebration is being so well received not only by the Midlands community but by the country as a whole.

“The awakening ceremony held on Saturday night was a spectacle to behold and it is a credit to Imagineer Productions in the way they have brought an icon of Coventry to life.  The atmosphere was electric and  I was proud to be part of this celebration.  The quality and intricacy of the workmanship of Lady Godiva and her mechanised horse reinforces the strong heritage of manufacturing in the region” said Tony Mitchell, managing director of Cranfield Business Recovery.

As one of just ten Golden Patrons of Godiva Awakes, Cranfield’s involvement in the project will live on as Lady Godiva returns to Coventry as plans are being put into place for her to be housed in a specially designed structure which will be located in the centre of the city.
