Kunming International Airport opened its brand new airport facility to the first of some 18 million passengers a year on 28thJune 2012, without a single baggage handling incident.

China’s fourth largest airport enlisted the services of Daifuku Group member Logan KSEC to install its 30 million baggage handling system. Following a series of stringent testing, the system performed perfectly on the airport’s opening day.

The system benefits from Logan’s revolutionary and highly flexible tilt-tray sorter and spans the length of more than 13 km to sort, x-ray and make up bags feeding from over 150 check-in desks. Main features of the project include two large Logan Teleflex Tilt Tray Sorters, measuring a total length of over 580 metres; 11 make-up carousels and 15 arrivals carousels. The system is managed using BagStage software and has a 26 PLC-based control system.

“There’s no doubt the project was a major undertaking,” says Dave Reynolds, Sales Director of world class baggage handling systems integrator, Logan Teleflex. “Kunming International moved from one airport to a completely new airport infrastructure of terminal building, roads, car parks, runways and ATC tower etc. literally overnight! It worked on the opening day as if someone had flicked a switch from ‘off’ to ‘on’ and without any of the issues and difficulties you would expect from a project of this scale.”

Rather than undergo a gradual transference Kunming chose to carry out the whole process overnight, making the glitch free opening even more impressive. The widely publicised start up problems of London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 has put projects like this under the spotlight. Although on a different scale, Kunming’s successful opening is testament to all companies involved in the project.

Dave added: “With Kunming we worked a well structured programme, which must have applied equally to a number of other subsystems at the airport. The baggage system was completed according to plan in December 2011, giving us considerable time to undergo a lengthy period of testing. This eliminated the risk associated with completing a system too close to the go live date.”

Following the success of the initial baggage handling system, Logan Teleflex also report that they are well on track with the follow on DCV baggage operation.
