Logan Teleflex France, now part of leading materials handling company Daifuku Co Ltd, has won a project to provide an Arrivals and Departures baggage handling system (BHS) for Eqypt’s Hurghada International Airport, an increasingly important gateway to major Red Sea tourist hotspots.

The contract was awarded to Logan Teleflex through Al-Marasem International, a subsidiary company of Saudi Ben Laden Group, with the system anticipated to be fully commissioned and live by 2013.

The project itself covers the design and build of nine Arrivals Hall inclined carousels, totaling nearly half a kilometer and the same length for the conveyor system. For the Departures Terminal, Logan’s will design, build, install and commission 72 check-ins with two belt conveyors, one set of belt conveyors totaling 850 metres and six flat carousels totaling 340 metres. Al-Marasem International will manage the control systems, platform, installation, commissioning and maintenance in support of the project.

Egypt’s Hurghada International Airport is served by around 46 airlines and charter service operators and handles between six to seven million international and domestic passengers a year, to and from Scandinavia, western and eastern Europe, as well as internally to Cairo and other Egyptian cities.

Commenting on this latest order, Bernard Magny, Sales Director, Logan Teleflex France said: “We really look forward working on this project with local partner Kemet Airport Suppliers. The project will include security with the installation of six screening machines for level 1 & 2 and two CTX machines for level 3 & 4, independently commissioned by a third party.”

Hurghada International Airport lies three miles south west of the down town city of Hurghada and a host of Red Sea beach and aquatic sports resorts. It operates scheduled passenger services to Cairo and direct connections to several European destinations. Seasonable charter flights are performed to cities in Western and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the CIS countries. The airport is undergoing a major renovation programme to accommodate the rising levels of leisure traffic.
