Professional services could compromise data protection with American-hosted Cloud networks warn Netmetix

Coventry based IT experts Netmetix are warning professional services companies that their business data, no matter how sensitive, is at risk of being accessed if stored in a cloud system that passes through any United States of America jurisdiction.

When selecting a cloud provider many businesses are unaware of the security issues that lie around the data storage process. Due to the introduction of the U.S. Patriot Act in 2011, which was a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks, any data that is housed in the U.S. is vulnerable to interception by authorities, even if that data is simply in transit through U.S. networks.

For professional services this can be a serious threat to business in regards to data protection and confidentiality agreements of sensitive data. Many businesses are unaware that even some U.K. cloud providers use American networks, which then gives the U.S. right to access this data.

Cloud computing has come under much scrutiny due to the concerns about data security, but Netmetix are highlighting to businesses that with the selection of the right cloud provider these risks will not apply. Infrastructure pooling is the concept that cloud is based around, and if the user data is spread across a provider’s global cloud network this would subject it to the regulatory frameworks of various authorities.

Netmetix offer their own complete, full platform cloud infrastructure which is entirely U.K. based. They have dual data centres that are local in the Derbyshire area, and offer clients the opportunity to visit them physically before signing any contract. They ensure that no data passes through U.S. networks in any way at all, therefore the data they store is completely secure on a local site.

Cloudmetix is a private cloud which means it operates with a private Platform-as-a-Service middleware layer managing application data and enforcing data security, acting a security blanket which will prevent prying eyes or rogue applications.

Paul Blore, managing director of Netmetix Limited is keen to outline how important it is for companies with secure data to use a private cloud, he said: “It is critical for businesses to understand the impact of the U.S. Patriot Act on data stored in the cloud. If you are a business looking to migrate to the cloud then you need to fully understand the security needs of your company and weigh disclosure risks against the cost and effort to preserve data privacy. Cloudmetix enables you to reap all the amazing benefits of cloud computing but without any security worries or repercussions of the Patriot Act.”

Netmetix will be talking about this and other cloud issues at a seminar on 18 April 2012. For further information on how to book contact Netmetix on 024 7640 81400 or visit www.netmetix.net.
