Cubist targets new opportunities in Gothenburg
Gothenburg’s life science community continues to attract innovative players with life science consultancy company Cubist establishing a local presence. The Stockholm-based firm aims to strengthen its collaboration with local companies and contribute to the continued growth of the region’s dynamic life science sector.
Cubist is part of the Finnish-headquartered Paree Group and it was started in Stockholm in 2018. It works mostly with software development connected to medical devices. It has supported companies in Gothenburg since its inception, but is now eyeing increased business opportunities in the region.
“By adding a local presence with a local team, we can extend our offering and better support our customers and become a tight collaboration partner,” says Nils Löfgren.
Gothenburg is one of the main hubs in Sweden’s growing life science sector, with around 600 companies who employ around 10,000 people in the region.
Löfgren has long been part of Gothenburg’s life science sector. Among other things, he’s headed a deeptech startup and had multiple roles at a multinational consultancy. Now he is heading Cubist’s operation in Gothenburg, where the firm has moved into GoCo Health Innovation City.
The area is a key site for Gothenburg’s life sector. Several global companies operate important sites there, and it’s attracting a growing number of innovative SMEs. It also hosts, among other things, the open innovation platform AstraZeneca BioVentureHub, and collaborative initiatives for developing future treatments, such as ATMPs and oligonucleotides.
“The concentration of life science companies and the activities around GoCo has and will continue to have a major impact on the growth of the region’s life science sector,” says Nils Löfgren.
“It facilitates collaboration between small and big companies, and companies with different specialties within the sector. Migration of resources becomes simpler with cross pollination effects, which benefits all players in the long run,” he says.
Cubist wants to play a role in Gothenburg's journey.
“We want to become an important contributor to the regional growth of life science by being a strategic supplier of knowhow and programming services,” says Löfgren.
“The need for our competences is apparent and we already have a first project running. We are supporting a local medical device startup by developing their first product, and initiating their risk management and devOps routines,” says Löfgren.
Iris Öhrn, our investment advisor for life science, welcomes the company’s expansion to Gothenburg.
“Service companies play a key role in driving advancements by offering the specialised expertise necessary to navigate the complex and lengthy development process of a life science innovation,” she says.
Iris explains that they also enable startups and other innovative companies to overcome gaps in internal competencies.
“Their services can be integral, value-adding steps toward groundbreaking treatments - which in turn helps put our life science sector on the global map,” says Iris.
