Milestone for new mobility neighbourhood
Construction has begun on the first new build of the emerging mobility neighbourhood beside Volvo Cars’ campus in Gothenburg.
The area surrounding Volvo Cars’ former headquarter in Gothenburg is the site of a large urban development project named Nāst Innovation Destination Torslanda. Earlier this week, owner and developer Steptura broke ground on a 31,000 sqm building, named Näst House. It marked the start of construction for phase two.
“Nāst House is further proof of our long-term commitment to creating the innovation cluster of the future. We see that this type of innovative environment attracts talent, and contributes to the companies' development and innovative power,” said Jacob Torell, founder and business developer at Steptura, in a statement.
The new building has been designed by the US firm SHoP Architects, known for their work on projects for Youtube, Uber and Google. It is specifically designed to foster innovation and collaboration.
Over 90% of the building is already leased with Volvo Cars among the future tenants, according to Steptura.
Phase one of Nāst Innovation Destination Torslanda began during the first quarter of this year and involves a total transformation of Volvo Cars’ former iconic headquarters, built in the early 80s. The building is being modernised and expanded by 22,000 sqm.
Behind the collaborative venture is Steptura, which owns and is developing Gothenburg's new life science neighbourhood GoCo Health Innovation City, and Volvo Cars.
The vision is to create a leading innovation cluster for knowledge- and research-intensive companies in vehicle development, materials technology, electrification, IT and sustainability. It will be an integrated part of Volvo Cars campus in Torslanda, and not far from the coming battery gigafactory.
Further strengthening Gothenburg’s attractiveness
Gothenburg already holds a prominent position within future mobility. Progressive brands including Volvo Cars, Volvo Group, Polestar, Einride, Heart Aerospace, Zeekr, Wireless Car and Autoliv are headquartered and/or operate important R&D sites here. The investments in Torslanda will further boost the region’s appeal to both talent and investments.
