Work exchange program to meet the competence needs of the new battery factory

Thousands will be offered jobs at the new battery gigafactory in Gothenburg in 2026. But with recruitments starting now the employment will begin as early as 2024 – in Skellefteå.

Northvolt and Volvo Cars' joint venture, Novo Energy, needs to hire thousands of employees for battery production that starts in 2026. They already want to increase their attraction to the upcoming factory, at the same time Northvolt needs employees for its factory in Skellefteå. This way they satisfy two needs in one fell swoop – increasing the availability of labour in Skellefteå and securing future skills for the upcoming battery factory in Torslanda.

This is Novo Energy's offer, which was recently presented at an event at Lindholmen in Gothenburg. The idea is to, starting now, employ people for the Gothenburg factory, but while it is being built, they will work at the factory in Skellefteå for one and a half to two years.

Anna-Lena Johansson at Business Region Göteborg is is in charge of coordinating the work of the supply of skills linked to the battery factory.

"This whole recruitment campaign is so well thought out. The idea to invite and make itself known as an employer by collaborating with the factory in Skellefteå, several years before the factory is in place in Gothenburg is really innovative! The attractiveness is precisely one of the biggest challenges we have identified in the implementation plan that we have developed in connection with NOVO Energy's establishment. Therefore, it is particularly gratifying that many people visited the recruiting event and got to take part of the exciting and interesting jobs that will be offered in the transition to a green automotive and mobility sector, says Anna-Lena Johansson.

Maria Rosbecker, Chief People Officer at Novo Energy, is one of the main people responsible for this venture and she is very pleased with the event.

– We had more than 800 people on site to take part in the launch event of this work exchange program. We have laready received a very large number of applications and right now we are reviewing them all together with Northvolt. We are already conducting interviews to find a good group of operators, technicians, engineers and shift leaders who can start in Skellefteå after the summer, says Maria Rosbecker.

Availability of labour with experience from industry

– It has been incredibly fun to see the great interest in our establishment and in working in this new modern industry. The availability of labour with experience from industry was one of the reasons why we chose to establish ourselves in Gothenburg. Now we hope that even more people will open their eyes to these professions of the future and that those who may be choosing between different programmes will see what exciting opportunities there are in technology and production in the future," says Maria Rosbecker.

The attractiveness of industry is one of the major challenges in the public sector's commitment to facilitate the supply of skills.

– Unfortunately, interest in industry-related programmes at upper secondary school is still too low. Therefore, the Gothenburg Region Technology College, together with Novo Energy, Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group and several other stakeholders, will engage in several activities, such as Teknikcamp, Future Skills and planned job experience through schools to increase awareness and interest among young people in this type of education.

– It important that more of the companies open up and show their and the industry’s opportunities to the employees of the future. There are many ways to do it and we are happy to help. So do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested,” says Anna-Lena Johansson.
