CALGARY – Mike Metcalfe, cancer survivor and community philanthropist and his friends will kick off 30 straight hours of soccer at the Calgary Soccer Centre. The event kicks off  Friday, November 2, at 4 pm and runs straight through until Saturday, November 3 at 10 pm.

The Soccer Marathon began in the fall of 2004 after Mike was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Mike’s friends rallied together after watching him endure over 500 hours of chemotherapy and treatment for his cancer. Since Mike is an avid soccer player, the concept of a 30 hour soccer marathon seemed fitting.

Over the past eight years the event has raised over $450,000 for Calgary Health Trust towards the purchase of cancer-related diagnostic and treatment equipment for the Foothills Hospital and had more than 6400 participants play over 270 hours of soccer.  This year the event will raise money for Calgary Health Trust to purchase a FotoFinder dermoscope for individuals at high risk for malignant melanoma. The machine photographs, analyses, scores and save images of the moles and means that abnormal moles can be detected quickly and any changes monitored.

Media are invited to attend the Soccer Marathon. Mike Metcalfe will be on site all weekend.
