CHLA Applauds LA City Council on Passage of Short-Term Rental Bill

SACRAMENTO, CA. – Dec. 11, 2018 – The California Hotel & Lodging Association commends the Los Angeles City Council for passing the long-sought short-term rental ordinance that protects city neighborhoods, ensures housing availability for our employees and insists on transparency by providers.

Today’s unanimous Council vote of 15-0 sends a strong message that short-term rentals must adhere to the same rules of taxation, safety and disclosure that hotels have for decades. By endorsing the provision that STRs are only for units with primary residents, the Council aligned with numerous California cities that are putting the needs of their communities first.

“Today’s City Council vote is what Los Angeles has needed for years –protecting neighborhoods and housing availability,’’ said Lynn S. Mohrfeld, President and CEO of the California Hotel & Lodging Association. “We applaud the Council’s leadership for creating an ordinance that holds short-term rentals accountable to the same legal and safety standards as that of the hospitality industry.”

CHLA, along with the American Hotel and Lodging Association and the Hotel Association of Los Angeles, worked diligently with Council members, neighborhood leaders, business groups and city residents to help shape this ordinance that now protects Los Angeles neighborhoods and ensures there is more available housing for hospitality employees.
