On World Book Day (March 3rd) science’s dynamic duo and Candy Jar authors, Mark Brake and Jon Chase will be teaming up with the Welsh Books Council to launch the Space, Time, Machine, Monster science competition in  schools across Wales.

World Book Day is about the fantastic potential of words. This competition is designed to encourage reading and the practical application of science. Mark and Jon are asking for pupils to create a science project based around either the words: Space. Time. Machine. Or monster.

The wacky boffins are looking for that stand-out ‘science experiment’ idea. Mark said: “Jon and I have always been science nerds, even from a young age. It’s fantastic that this competition encourages children to focus their attention on creating the ultimate science project.”

Jon Chase said: “We want that eureka moment. This can be a picture, a video or anything really!”

The competition is designed to encourage scientific curiosity and enthusiastically promote science. Subjects covered in the book include: Are robots going to rule over us? How do lightsabers work? Or, how do you build a time machine? Mark continued: “We want children to be inspired by the book to create an outstanding scientific experiment.”

Hayley Cox, senior publishing coordinator at Candy Jar Books, said: “At Candy Jar, as you can imagine, we are passionate about words. We wanted to do something to recognise this. We are proud to be involved with this initiative, and if gets young minds interested in science too, it’s a double-win.”

Mark and Jon will also be performing at the World Book Day Spread the Word Arts and Literary Festival organised by Stephens and George Charitable Trust in Merthyr Tydfil. They will be appearing alongside other Candy Jar authors such as Emmerdale’s Sammy Winward, Andy Frankham-Allen (editor of Candy Jar’s Doctor Who spin-off range of books, Lethbridge-Stewart), as well the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Nathan Wyburn.
