Carlton was founded in 1992 by Jonathan Goodman with Carlton Communications plc, at that time one of the 100 largest public companies in the UK, specialising in broadcasting and television and film-making services. Throughout its history Carlton's core publishing skill has been producing illustrated high-quality mass-market reference books, that also entertain, for the worldwide market.
In 2000 the company bought Andre Deutsch, a publisher of biography and history with a good reputation within the UK ,and in 2002 the company bought Prion, a publisher of humour and nostalgia, and became the Carlton Publishing Group.
In 2004 after Carlton and Granada Plc merged to form ITV, the largest commercial broadcaster in the UK, Jonathan Goodman bought the company from ITV. Since then the company has gone from strength to strength. Sales have increased by 53% to US $35 million and the company has opened up many important relationships internationally in foreign language markets while retaining its historic commercial ties with North America and Australia.
Our major success as sports publisher was confirmed with the announcement that Carlton Books has been appointed to publish official books for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We already publish FIFA-branded titles, and are publishing exciting books with UEFA Champions League and both the Premier League and the Football League, making us the most important sports publisher in the world.
Carlton have also pushed at the boundaries of children's publishing with a series of Augmented Reality (AR) books. AR allows your webcam to recognise the pages of a book and produce 3D images that you can control on your computer.
