Clavister Shows How Communications Service Providers Can Securely Adopt SDN & NFV in their Networks

New guide from Clavister highlights benefits of SDN/NFV adoption and the right strategic approach for planning migrations

Clavister (Nasdaq: CLAV), a leader in high-performance network security, has published a newsletter, “Virtualized Security – The end of Big Iron”, a new guide for Communications Service Providers (CSPs) on how to plan and securely migrate their networks to SDN/NFV, to gain maximum strategic and operational benefits.

According to Gartner, CSPs can anticipate Opex reductions of 60% and Capex reductions of 40%* with the adoption of SDN/NFV infrastructures, and drive the introduction of new services such as Software-Defined WAN and virtual CPEs.  The transition to dynamic SDN/NFV environments has already started:  through to 2018, over 70% of CSPs will have conducted proof of concept projects on NFV and SDN, and more than 50% will move toward implementation in order to remain competitive.

Clavister’s guide highlights how CSPs can deliver and maintain security as they migrate to SDN / NFV.  It shows how they can overcome the challenges of maintaining performance and scalability, network interoperability, and supporting core applications while ensuring a smooth migration path and scalability from proof-of-concept to commercial deployments.

Andreas Åsander, product marketing manager at Clavister said: “As CSPs look to take advantage of the elastic scalability that SDN and NFV offer, it is essential that they build security into these new network environments, to protect their infrastructure and subscriber data against threats.  However, the inflexible ‘big iron’ physical security appliances that CSPs currently rely on lack the scalability needed for virtualized infrastructures.  This acts as a brake on innovation and can lead to security gaps emerging.

“To help CSPs maximize the value of their SDN/NFV deployments, and capitalize on the new revenue opportunities they present, security must be integral to these virtualized functions.  Clavister’s virtualized security solutions enable CSPs and operators to be more agile, growing their network in a seamless, elastic way with security at every point, while simultaneously enjoying significant ongoing cost savings."

According to Gartner, SDN and NFV can drive robust revenue from new digital services and service enhancements (such as on-demand virtual VPN services for enterprises) as well as enabling CSPs to access entirely new services and markets. This potential will be achieved through the greatly increased levels of operational efficiency, agility and service innovation that the new technologies bring.  Early-mover CSPs should consider investments in SDN and NFV as the only way to take a technology market leadership position in the heavily saturated telecommunications marketplace*.

Clavister’s Virtualized Network Firewalls (VNFs) are purpose built for telecoms networks, supporting a wide range of security applications including LTE/5G Backhaul Security, Gi/SGi Firewalling, Roaming Security, Virtual CPE Security, WiFi Optimization and Domain Security.  Clavister Security VNFs offer full compliance and support for leading industry standards such as 3GPP and ETSI-NFV, for seamless integration.
