Ilmatar Windpower Plc has signed the land lease agreements and initiated an assessment project to establish a wind farm in Alajärvi, Finland. The wind farm is planned to consist of around 15 turbines with the combined nominal capacity of 45–67.5 MW. The project area is marked as a wind power production area in the regional plan. The partial local master plan process and the environmental impact assessment are planned to be initiated in January 2013. Power production in the wind farm is estimated to start in 2015.

"The Alajärvi area is excellent for wind power production. The area has earlier been used for extraction of peat, due to which environmental factors of the area have earlier been reviewed in a comprehensive way. The City of Alajärvi, together with the municipalities of Soini and Vimpeli, has taken an active role in developing their areas for wind power production through, among others, zoning,” says Ilmatar’s COO Mikko Toivanen.

Ilmatar is a Finnish wind power company aiming at building a combined nominal wind power capacity of 300 MW in Finland by the end of 2015. Such amount of capacity corresponds to wind power capacity generated by approximately 100 wind turbines with a typical capacity of 3 MW each. Ilmatar’s wind farm projects currently under development are located in Raasepori, Luhanka, Hartola, Jämsä, Saarijärvi, Somero, and Hamina, and will add up to an estimated capacity of approximately 200 MW. In addition, Ilmatar is exploring several other possible locations for new wind farms around Finland.
