The world’s best will participate in Sweden’s largest match racing event with Preem Petroleum as host and Concordia Maritime together with Stena Bulk as main sponsors. The Preem Lysekil Women’s Match for the Stena Bulk Trophy will be inaugurated on 1 August and the races will take place on 2-6 August.

“After last year’s victory in the trimaran sail racing competition Nokia Oops Cup, Concordia Maritime has once again set its sights on sail racing. This time, together with Concordia Maritime as the main sponsors of the women’s match racing event in Lysekil at the beginning of August when the Swedish summer is at its best”, says Hans Norén, President of Concordia Maritime. “The top names in women’s match racing will come to the West Coast to compete for The Stena Bulk Trophy with prize money of around SEK 400,000. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch spectator-friendly match racing of world class”, Hans Norén adds. “Lysekil Women’s Match is an event that is appreciated by both sailing enthusiasts and our employees and the competition means a lot for the Municipality of Lysekil. This makes Preem involvement in the races even more important as we are a big employer on the West Coast”, says Michael G:son Löw, President and CEO of Preem Petroleum AB. Lysekil Lysekil offers excellent conditions for match racing – sailing conditions are most often good and because of the currents, the competitors have to risk sailing close to the rocks. As a result, sail racing is very spectator friendly with the rocks as natural stands for the spectators. Participants 12 of the world’s best match racing women– including the Swedes Marie Björling, Linda Rahm and Malin Millbourn – have accepted to compete. Match racing Match racing is the form of sail racing that is easiest to understand – at least for the spectators on the rocks. Only two boats to keep an eye on and the winner is the first boat to cross the finishing line. Normally, the boats sail twice round a course that starts with a windward tack and finishes in a following wind. How fast the boats sail round the course is thus unimportant. Crossing the finishing line first is all that matters. Here, the teams’ tactical ability and skill are decisive. The competition The competition Preem Lysekil’s Women’s Match will be the only sailing competition on the West Coast this year. This will be the second time the competition is held. The first time, in 2004, it attracted the best sailors in the world and was seen by 25-30,000 spectators. Preem Lysekil Women’s Match for the Stena Bulk Trophy is organised by Sailnet Lysekil AB and Live Göteborg in cooperation with the yacht club Lysekils SS Gullmar (LSSG). The official host of Lysekil Women’s Match is the oil company Preem with its main partners Stena Bulk AB and Concordia Maritime AB and Carpe Diem Beds of Sweden, Midroc Scandinavia and Lysekil Local Authority as partners.
