Norwegian Cruise Line will be deploying their even bigger cruise ship “Norwegian Getaway” on their cruises in 2017, with Copenhagen as the starting point of their trips to the Baltic and to the Norwegian fjords. The ship can accommodate almost 4,000 guests, which is 1,000 more than its predecessor “Norwegian Star”, which has been used in recent seasons.

A total of 18 cruises will be offered departing from Copenhagen, one more than this year. Norwegian Getaway can accommodate 4,000 passengers and 1,600 crew members. It is 325 metres long and was delivered from Meyer Werft in Germany in 2013, at a cost of around USD 600 million.

Its first call will be on 16 May 2017, when 4,000 guests will disembark between 07:00 and 11:00. An hour or so later 4,000 new guests will start to board, all of whom have to be on board before the ship’s departure at 17:00.

In connection with a single call, around 12,000 suitcases are handled alongside 15 large trucks with all kinds of provisions for the large number of guests. 35 to 40 tour buses are used to transport guests to or from the ship. The call also generates around 1,500 taxi and limousine journeys, and some guests use public transport facilities in the form of train, metro and bus.

“The increased number of guests from Norwegian Cruiseline will generate additional revenue for traders and business within the cruise segment in Copenhagen of between DKK 50 and 55 million a year,” says Arnt Møller Pedersen, who is responsible for cruises at Copenhagen Malmö Port.
