Over one in ten private renters move due to bad neighbours

New data* from landlord insurance specialists Cover4LetProperty reveals that more than one in ten private tenants have moved due to not getting on with their neighbours.

The survey wanted to find out the reasons why a private tenant typically moves from one rented property to another and to see whether the move is influenced by the landlord and / or the property, or by other circumstances.

The study showed that in the last 5 years, 53% of respondents have moved from one rented property to another because of the following reasons …

  • 38% moved to a different area;
  • 26% (so just over a quarter of all respondents) said the cost;
  • 12% did not get on with their neighbours;
  • 7% said they moved due to the bad condition of the property while another 7% said they wanted more space.

Other reasons included wanting a parking space (2%), and not getting on with the other tenants (2%). A further 2% also said they moved due to not getting on with their landlord.

Richard Burgess, Director at Cover4LetProperty, says: “The results of the research made interesting reading. While it is obvious that things like moving to another area or moving to save money would feature highly on the list, it was surprising so many private renters move due to bad neighbours.

“And while 7% said they moved due to the property being in poor condition, it was refreshing to see that just 2% moved due to not getting on with their landlords.

“Overall, this study proves that the stereotypical ‘bad’ landlord isn’t the real reason why tenants move – it is mainly due to circumstances outside of the landlords’ control.”
