DIO planners win accolade for new Defence college

Town planners at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) are celebrating after the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) commended their work on the new Defence Technical Training College at MOD Lyneham.

The new College, which will bring together technical training across the Armed Forces on one site in Wiltshire, has been granted a commendation in the RTPI’s South West Awards for Planning Excellence, in the ‘Schemes on the Ground’ category.

Sustainability is a key feature of both the plan for the 466 hectare site and the submission for the award. The site is a former RAF base and plans intend for existing buildings to be refurbished and redeveloped wherever possible, rather than raising new structures.

Stephen Harness, a DIO Chartered Town Planner who led the application, said:

“We’re delighted that the project to redevelop RAF Lyneham into a tri-services training college has been recognised by the RTPI. It’s a huge project and we’ve been working hard on the planning, including biodiversity assessments, public consultations and liaising with other local stakeholders such as Wiltshire County Council. The finished College will provide first-class facilities for the Armed Forces and will create more than 1,200 new civilian jobs.”

Notes to Editors

1) The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) plays a vital role in supporting our Armed Forces by building, maintaining and servicing what the men and women who serve our country need to live, work, train and deploy on operations.

2) DIO is part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD). It is responsible for managing and maintaining land and properties, as well as providing related support services, to meet the current and future needs of the MOD and personnel at home and abroad, and to support current operations.

3) Our work includes supporting operational units by providing and improving single living and service family accommodation; training areas and historic military sites. DIO actively manages these to ensure the needs of Defence are met, value for money is achieved, and its heritage is protected, and to achieve its environmental goals.
