The Sustainable Development Team at Royal Air Force (RAF) Northolt in Middlesex has won the MOD’s Team Energy Award 2012.

An impressive outcome saw the introduction of the Waste to Energy initiative, with the help of Grundon Waste Management. In 2012, the site forecast a 99.89% turn around of waste being recycled or reused, leaving just 0.11% of waste being sent to landfill. This would achieve an estimated £10,000 reduction in landfill tax in 2012/2013, surpassing the waste recovery target four years ahead of the required timescale.

Their initiatives have provided valuable evidence to support the sustainability programme and have had a positive impact on the wider Garrison.

The team achieved a number of successes including:

  • Solar powered controls to the White House Gate entrance
  • LED signage on the airfield
  • The planting of 223 trees and shrubs
  • Installation of 28 allotment patches for use by civilian and service personnel

One of the most innovative projects was the trial of an LED Aerodrome Ground Lighting (AGL) as part of the same project, which has reduced carbon emissions by 44-55%; this installation also dramatically reduced maintenance of the assets minimising the impact of repairs upon Station operations.

Wing Commander Mike Smith, of RAF Northolt, welcomed the Award:

“I am delighted that the Northolt team have received recognition, who through foresight, innovation and collaboration with industry and local government have delivered real effect and championed being a responsible neighbour to the local community that sits on our boundary. We are most grateful to the Energy Award Board for recognising this contribution to the Departments sustainability agenda.”

The Award Board judged the team to be worthy winners for their genuine partnering ethos and proactive attitude towards a sustainable future.

Representing the Sanctuary Award Board Marcus Yeo, Chief Executive of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), said:

“I have been a member of the judging panel for the Sanctuary Awards for several years, and I am always impressed by the breadth and quality of environmental work undertaken on MOD property. This year has been no exception and it was a hard task to select award winners from such a diverse range of high-quality submissions.”
