Mobile Living expert, Dometic, has done a consumer survey which indicates majority of Swedes have changed their original plans and will instead stay in Sweden for summer vacation this year. The survey also shows that this “Staycation” trend is here to stay.

The concept of Staycation first appeared during the financial crisis of 2007 and later extended to those who wished to minimize the environmental footprints for their vacations.

But this summer, staycations will be more popular than ever according to a recent consumer survey Dometic has done.

Peter Kjellberg, Chief Marketing Officer & Head of Group Sector Other Verticals at Dometic, says, “Staycation is an established trend in the US but now, because of the Covid-19 outbreak, it has become a global norm. In Sweden, most of the people will not travel abroad for vacation. Instead, they will stay in Sweden.

“Noticeably, they will use their own vehicles to take domestic vacations and spend several days outdoors. And, for many, this will be a new experience. Interestingly, the staycation trend is rapidly growing in the younger generation.

“Dometic is the leading company in the world when it comes to providing solutions for mobile living. Our solutions will satisfy the demands that Staycation will create.”According to this online survey done in May, 61% of Swedes planned for a summer vacation abroad before the outbreak. But now, with the pandemic, only 25% are still planning to go abroad. This means 75% of Swedes are planning to stay in Sweden this summer.

The frequency and length of the vacation will also change this year. Of those who plan to travel in Sweden this summer, two-thirds plan 1-2 trips, usually longer than three days.

The survey also indicates there will be a new type of outdoor vacationer this summer. Because of the travel restrictions, some are planning to use their own vehicles for a longer road vacation equipped with new camping gear. Some of those will be first-time campers.

This trend is not only in Sweden.

According to the Kampgrounds of America (KOA)’s North American Camping Report (special version for Covid-19), the pandemic may bring more leisure travelers to the camping market. A third of leisure travelers who have not camped before say that they are now interested in camping. The top reasons these prospective campers cite are wanting to spend time outdoors after staying home for so long (46%); camping is an affordable way to travel (41%); and it’s easier to practice social distancing, compared to other types of travel (37%).

It also states that the highest level of interest among this group of prospective new campers is among Gen Z* (44%) and millennials** (45%). There has been an influx of new, younger campers to the market in recent years, a trend tracked annually by KOA’s North American Camping Report, and COVID-19 could accelerate the rate of adoption among young people trying camping.
