Energy savings for Weston Super Mare - £650,787 for Bournville estate
Ready for Retrofit has awarded Alliance Homes £650,787 to improve the energy efficiency of properties on the Bourneville Housing Estate, Weston super Mare.
The programme, run by the Energy Saving Trust will help fund the retrofitting of a number of energy efficiency measures including external wall insulation, narrow cavity fill, window replacements and lighting upgrades.
Including the grant, Alliance Homes will invest a total £1,972,082 to fund 865 retrofit measures. These are expected to bring a saving of 6,461 tonnes of carbon over their lifetime as well as warmer homes and cheaper energy bills for tenants.

Ready for Retrofit aims to support companies such as these, build skills and technical knowledge to create a strong retrofit and microgeneration sector in the region.”
As part of the funding package, Alliance Homes is a planning to host a series of ‘Toolbox Talks’. Taking place in in the New Year, they aim to share best practice and the latest technical innovations with the successful contractors, to build a strong local supply chain.
Anthony Bebbington, Investment and Major Works Manager at Alliance Homes said: ”This scheme represents a significant opportunity to upgrade tenants homes in Weston super Mare, which are within the UK’s top 1% of most deprived areas and therefore subject to high levels of fuel poverty.
“The funding from the Ready for Retrofit Project makes it realistic for us to complete this large scale project targeting 265 homes. These measures will have significant impacts for our tenants in cost savings on fuel and also increasing thermal comfort levels. We will also be using local businesses to deliver the works.”
The contracts to carry out external wall insulation and window replacement works have been won by South West companies Low Carbon Exchange, Joyners and Britannia Windows.
Joyners and Low Carbon Exchange managed by Scottish Southern Electric are currently on site installing the first phase of external wall insulation. The second phase of external wall insulation and further works including window installation by Britannia Windows and boiler replacements by an internal team are expected to follow shortly.
The £8 million Ready for Retrofit programme is a funding opportunity for social landlords to improve the energy efficiency of their homes through retrofitting renewable heat and electricity measures. Partly funded by the European Regional Development Fund the programme aims to support the supply chain for retrofit by stimulating demand.

Ready for Retrofit
Ready for Retrofit is a three-year project offering a new funding opportunity for social landlords in the south west of England (except Cornwall) to improve the energy efficiency of their existing stock. The aim of the project is to grow the local supply chain for low carbon building retrofit by stimulating demand and supporting local SME businesses, in order to create a sustainable domestic energy efficiency and microgeneration sector.
